CNC Turning Applications

What products can be made on a cnc machine?

A Computer numerical control (CNC) lathe is a very convenient and efficient manufacturing technique that uses computer-programmed machines and tools to design a wide variety of materials and items. Such items are often produced with incredible precision in mind, so that each item emerges from the machine exactly the way it was designed. The same goes for the individual parts or tools that a CNC machine can design. Many of these items are used in industries where precision must be unsurpassed, such as aviation and aerospace.

What is CNC used for?

These are some of the most common elements that a CNC machine can produce:

  • Auto parts used in the inner workings of a car help the vehicle to function properly.
  • Aviation parts used in the inner workings of an aircraft to ensure that it functions properly and is handled by a pilot with ease.
  • Steel aerospace parts for a shuttle, such as a steel part used to support the outer base of the spacecraft
  • Prototypes for certain products, such as the prototype of a wooden figurine for the purpose of mass production.
  • Metal parts used inside a smartphone.
  • Plastic pieces designed to support the outer shell of a battery-powered portable AM / FM radio
  • Plastic parts of a kitchen blender to help you mix up some drinks for your next house party.

Because CNC offers such precise cutting and handling capabilities, it’s easy to say that almost anything made from metal, aluminum, alloys, and other miscellaneous materials can be completely built or enhanced using a CNC machine. Whether it’s a CNC mill, CNC plasma cutter, or CNC waterjet cutter, there are numerous CNC machines that offer all kinds of production techniques to suit any budget and manufacturing needs. This is the reason why CNC machines are found both in private homes and in large production centers.

CNC is all around us

CNC machines can cut almost any material you can imagine. CNC-made parts are all around us. Aside from being used to make toys, molds, prototypes, and furniture, it is perhaps the only way to produce high-precision metal parts for engineering design. It is used to make automotive parts, SpaceX rockets, insulation parts and even the smallest and most delicate parts of small electronics. This is because CNC machining can create parts with higher dimensional accuracy than most other common manufacturing technologies, achieving very tight tolerances.

Machining tolerances determine the limits within which the dimension of a part can vary. The standard tolerance of any dimension in CNC is ± 0.125mm, however tighter tolerances of ± 0.050mm or even tolerances of ± 0.025mm are possible, that’s about a quarter of the width of a human hair!
