History of CNC

History of CNC

The first lathes date from before Christ. Images depicting the use of lathes have been found among the ancient Egyptians. Leonardo Da Vinci developed his own lathe in which a flywheel was driven by a footboard, allowing continuous rotation. During the industrial revolution, lathes played an important role in the production of components for steam, spinning and weaving machines. Typical components made by turning are shafts, screws, and bolts.

NC-Lathe

In the 1950s, the first numerically controlled (NC) lathes were developed in the US in which tool movements and speeds are controlled by a controller that reads perforated strips. In the 1970s, punched tapes were used as a data carrier for controlling the controller. Progress in data processing has since had a direct impact on the further development of the lathe into a CNC lathe.
